Chapter Twelve â Through a Darkling Glass.
Xagigg, had successfully enchanted a small hand mirror. It was silver, it had pink enamelled flowers on it. On the handle was an engraved picture of a girl, she looked like she was winking. Importantly, it took the spells. He had never worked so hard and so fast. He was surprised he had it in him. Perhaps the darkstone had augmented him a bit, well, who knew? He was the leading authority in his field. This made him pleased and sad. He didnât often feel sad. He admitted to himself that he missed Rhian. She had such a level head. She could cut right to the heart of a problem with her incisive logic, or indeed her knives, should occasion warrant.
Rhian he thought, was a brilliant knife thrower. She always went out with six throwing knives about her person. She was quick too. Quicker than he could throw a command spell. Heâd sorted that out too. Heâd had to, it was his favourite charm.
His mind had strayed, he brought it back. He shortened its leash. First to business, he thought. Now, can I see my friend of the glass castle? He concentrated. The image of the beach at Manaxa swam into view. Good, good he thought. Heâs not disrupting magic too much anymore.
He paused. I suppose he thought, itâs because magic and the world has become more like the Otherside. Hmm. He looked again, concentrating, slowly moving inland. Dragons, two stretched out amidst the trees, and, ah, a citadel!
The Citadel shimmered amongst the palm trees. It was crystal, its towers, all five soared, he guessed one hundred feet in the air. The hall itself domed in iridescent pearl like colour must have been fifty feet across at least. Nice, he thought. Tasteless. Not as good as my old fortress, at Evehollow. All built from illusion.
He looked in. The hall was full of figures, stately courtiers and servants. All tall and well made. They, are illusions too, he thought. There! He could see him!
He sat long waist length silver hair, youthful features, violet eyes, leaning towards a great Dragon head sculpture, that blinked.
He has a Dragon with its head poked into his hall? Xagigg was startled, and lost the connection. This was a complication, and a possibility.
Next, thought, Xagigg. He searched Carseport, found the City hall. Hmm. He teleported in.
Osgyth the Chancellor was sat at a long trestle table, with rows of scrolls, quills and ink pots before him. His Clerks old and new, (he had to recruit extra to handle the Marshall of the Realms demands), laboured about him, occasionally asking questions, occasionally depositing scrolls, or taking one away.
A pop of displaced air and a shade of gaunt nightmare stood before him.
It wore long dark woollen robes, over, tatty dark leather trews and jacket. It had a gaunt, almost skeletal face, with a great dark purple gem throbbing in its forehead.
âAre you in charge?â It asked.
The apparition gripped a ladies mirror, of quite a classic design, with pink flowers.
